But every so often your home is trying to tell you that something is genuinely wrong, and with a few of these warning signs you really should not wait. The tricky part is knowing which is which.

Why you Shouldn’t Ignore an Electrical Fault
Electrical faults rarely sort themselves out. Left alone they tend to get worse, and the two real risks are fire and electric shock. The safest thing to do with anything you are unsure about is to have a registered electrician take a look, because the fault you cannot see behind the wall is usually the dangerous one. The 7 Electrical Warning Signs you Should Never Ignore
If you notice any of the following, take it seriously. We have flagged how urgent each one is, so you know whether to ring straight away or book someone in soon.
1. A burning smell or scorch marks around a socket or switch.
This is the one to act on fastest. A burning smell or brown scorch marks around a socket or switch usually means something is overheating or arcing behind the fitting. Switch off that circuit at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, stop using the socket and do not plug anything else into it. Call an electrician straight away.
2. A socket or switch plate that is warm or hot to the touch.
Sockets and switches should stay cool. If one feels warm or hot, it often points to a loose connection or too much resistance behind the fitting and that heat can build until it becomes a fire risk. Stop using it and leave it well alone. Call an electrician straight away.
3. A crackling, buzzing or sizzling sound from a socket or the fuse board.
Your electrics should be silent. A crackling sound from a socket, or a buzzing/sizzling from the fuse board, is a sign of loose connections or arcing, where electricity is jumping a small gap it should not. It is one of those faults that sounds minor but can escalate quickly. Call an electrician straight away.
4. A fuse board or breaker that keeps tripping.
A trip is not a fault in itself. It is a safety device doing its job, cutting the power to protect you. The problem is when it happens again and again. Repeated electricity tripping in the house means something underlying is wrong, whether that is an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or a wiring fault, and resetting it again only hides the cause. 5. Scorching, discolouration or sparking when you plug something in.
A small spark as a plug makes contact can be normal, but a proper flash, black marks, or a socket that sparks every time you use it points to heat damage or arcing at the outlet. That fitting needs to be taken out of use. Call an electrician straight away.
6. A mild shock or tingle from a switch, appliance or tap.
Even a faint tingle off a light switch, an appliance or a metal tap should never be brushed off. It usually points to an earthing or wiring fault, and it is a warning that the protection meant to keep you safe is not working as it should. Call an electrician straight away.
7. Lights flickering or dimming across the whole house.

When is an Electrical Fault an Emergency?
If you are wondering when an electrical fault is an emergency, here is the simple rule we give people. Anything involving a burning smell, smoke, sparking, a socket or switch that is hot to the touch, or any kind of shock is an act-now situation. In those cases, make it safe if you can, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit, keep everyone away from the area, and ring a registered electrician straight away.
Other signs are less immediate. The odd trip with no smell and no heat, for example, can usually wait for a booking in the next day or two rather than a call-out in the middle of the night. If you are ever unsure, treat it as urgent and ring someone. It costs nothing to ask, and a registered electrician can make it safe quickly.
What to do While you Wait for the Electrician
Once you have made the area safe and put the call in, there are a few things worth doing while you wait. Leave the affected circuit switched off, even if the rest of the house is fine and keep the room clear so nobody plugs anything back in out of habit. If you can, note down what happened and when, whether it was a smell, a spark, a sound or a trip, as it helps the electrician find the fault faster when they arrive.
Just as important is what not to do. Do not attempt a DIY repair, as working on live electrics risks both shock and fire. Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping without finding out why. And do not keep using a socket that is hot or smells of burning, even if it still seems to work. Leave it switched off and let the electrician find the cause.
