The Harmless Causes (And How to Rule Them Out)
If only one light is affected, the cause is very often one of these.
A loose or faulty bulb
A bulb that isn’t seated snugly in its fitting is one of the most common culprits going. Turn the light off, let the bulb cool, and check it’s screwed or pushed in firmly. If that doesn’t settle it, try a bulb you know works in the same fitting.
The wrong type of dimmer switch
A lot of older dimmers were built for traditional bulbs and don’t play nicely with today’s LEDs, which leads to flickering, buzzing or a limited dimming range. If the flickering light is on a dimmer, that mismatch is a likely suspect.
LED bulb compatibility
Even without a dimmer, a cheaper or lower-quality LED can flicker on its own, or just isn’t suited to the fitting it’s in. Swapping in a good-quality, correctly rated bulb often clears it up on the spot.
A bulb on its way out
Bulbs don’t always fail with a dramatic pop. Sometimes they flicker for a while as they near the end of their life. If a single bulb has started acting up after months or years, age is very often the answer.

If your lights dip the moment a big appliance kicks in, like the electric shower, the kettle or the washing machine, that’s worth noting. An occasional dip isn’t unusual, but if it’s pronounced, or happening more and more, a circuit may be carrying more than it comfortably can.
It’s the same story when the flickering is tied to one room rather than the whole house. That usually points to something specific on that circuit, like a worn connection or an overloaded run, rather than a single dud bulb. Neither is necessarily an emergency, but both are worth having looked at.
The Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Some flickering does warrant prompt attention, especially when it comes with company. Treat the following as your cue to call a professional:
- Flickering across the whole house at once, when it isn’t tied to a single appliance. The issue is likely further back in your system than any one fitting.
- Flickering that keeps coming back. A recurring flutter you can’t trace to a bulb or dimmer is a sign something underlying needs checking.
- Flickering alongside other symptoms. A socket or switch that’s warm to the touch, a burning smell, a buzzing fuse board or scorch marks all point to loose connections, an ageing fuse board, or wiring reaching the end of its safe life. Faulty wiring and overloaded circuits are a recognised cause of house fires in Ireland, so don’t sit on it.
